Sometimes Your Home Just Needs a Refresh

You don’t always need a renovation to completely change the way a room feels.

One of the things I hear most often from clients is some version of:

“I don’t hate my house. It just doesn’t feel finished.”

And honestly? Sometimes that’s exactly it.

The layout works. The flooring is staying. The kitchen doesn't need to be torn apart. The room may already have a sofa you love or a few pieces you know you want to keep.

It just needs another layer.

I think there can be this idea that hiring an interior designer means you're about to renovate your entire home or replace everything you own. But some of my favorite projects are much simpler than that.

Sometimes we're just making what you already have feel better.

Start With What’s Working

A refresh doesn't mean starting over. Before I think about what needs to be added, I want to know what we're keeping. Maybe it's the sofa. Maybe it's a dining table you've had forever. Maybe the room already has beautiful flooring or a paint color that works. Those pieces become our starting point. From there, we can figure out what's missing rather than replacing things simply for the sake of replacing them.

The Rug Is Usually Doing More Than You Think

If a room feels a little off, the rug is one of the first things I look at. Is it large enough? Does it relate to the furniture? Is it bringing in the warmth, texture, pattern, or contrast the room needs? A rug can completely change the feeling of a space—and getting the scale right can make furniture you already own suddenly feel much more intentional.

Lighting Changes Everything

You can have beautiful furniture in a room and still have it feel flat if the lighting isn't right. A table lamp, floor lamp, or even swapping an existing fixture can add warmth and dimension that overhead lighting alone simply can't. I love having multiple sources of light in a room. It makes a home feel softer, cozier, and much more lived in.

Add the Pieces That Make It Feel Finished

This is where things start getting fun. Artwork. Pillows. Window treatments. Side tables. Lamps. A beautiful chair. Something vintage. A few objects with personality. Individually, these things can seem small. Together, they're often what takes a room from we moved our furniture in to this feels like home. And you don't need a lot. I'd rather choose a handful of pieces that really belong in the room than fill every empty surface simply because it's there.

Sometimes You Need Another Set of Eyes

When you live in a home every day, it can be surprisingly difficult to see what's missing. You know something doesn't feel quite right—you just can't put your finger on why. That's one of my favorite parts of coming into an existing space. Sometimes the answer isn't complicated at all. The furniture needs to move. The rug needs to be larger. The artwork is hung too high. We're missing a lamp. One chair would balance the entire room. Small changes can have a surprisingly big impact when they're the right changes.

You Don't Have to Start Over

Your home doesn't need to be brand new to feel beautifully designed. Sometimes the bones are already there.

You just need the right rug, a few thoughtful pieces, another layer of texture, and someone to help pull it all together.

Because sometimes your home doesn't need more. It just needs the right things.
